What the link gets you
According to Railway's official affiliate documentation, a new user who registers through a referral link is given $20 of Railway credit. Railway itself puts that on a par with one month of the Pro tier. Whoever shared the link collects a 15% commission on what the new customer pays over their first 12 months, and none of it comes out of your credit.
Compared with the standard trial
Sign up without a link and you get a single $5 grant, which lapses after 30 days or as soon as it is used up. The trial comes with 1 GB of RAM, shared vCPU instead of dedicated, and a cap of 5 services per project. If the account is not verified with GitHub, outbound network traffic is restricted to a limited set of ports.
